Smart-Phone Security; a possible loss of data and privacy

Even though businesses are extraordinarily sensitive about protecting company data, proprietary knowledge, and their client’s financial exchanges, this article points out, we may have barred the doors and left the windows open.

Many smart phones that we use in our daily business have tracking software (Carrier IQ) that record our messaging, and even the keystrokes we use; and they can routinely transmit even encrypted transmissions in clear text.    The phone companies claim to be innocent of “spying”, and there is no demonstrated breach of any company's interests, but at the same time they claim there is a clear opt out option; which as you will see in the video is not so.

It appears to me that this is a situation in which the unintended fallout of a tool developed to help the telephone industry, has at minimum terrific security concerns, and at worst is a serious temptation for phone hackers and opportunistic purveyors of private data.

ProxyIT will be following this issue with interest, if you have questions about your smart phone and provider, call us.   We will be updating this report, but will be happy to talk to you about what we find in the way of safeguards.
